    Types of Thyroid Conditions

    Understanding Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy, heart rate, temperature, and more. When it malfunctions, the effects ripple throughout the entire body.

    Hypothyroidism
    Underactive Thyroid

The thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, slowing metabolism and affecting nearly every system in the body.

    • Fatigue & sluggishness
    • Weight gain
    • Sensitivity to cold
    • Dry skin & hair
    • Depression
    • Slow heart rate
    • Constipation
    • Memory problems
    Hyperthyroidism
    Overactive Thyroid

Excess thyroid hormone accelerates body functions, causing a wide range of physical symptoms and metabolic changes.

    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Rapid heartbeat
    • Heat intolerance
    • Anxiety & nervousness
    • Tremors
    • Increased sweating
    • Frequent bowel movements
    • Enlarged thyroid (goiter)
    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
    Autoimmune Hypothyroidism

The most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US. The immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid, gradually reducing its function.

    • Gradual fatigue onset
    • Weight changes
    • Joint & muscle pain
    • Facial puffiness
    • Irregular periods
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Pale skin
    • Brittle nails
    Grave's Disease
    Autoimmune Hyperthyroidism

An autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid to overproduce hormones. It is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.

    • Bulging eyes (exophthalmos)
    • Goiter
    • Skin thickening on shins
    • Muscle weakness
    • Irregular heartbeat
    • Increased appetite
    • Sleep difficulties
    • Fine tremors in hands
    Accurate Diagnosis

    Thyroid Testing & Diagnosis

Thyroid disorders are diagnosed through a combination of blood tests and imaging. At Starling Clinic, we offer comprehensive thyroid panels to give you a complete picture of your thyroid health.

Because symptoms of thyroid disease often overlap with other conditions like depression, fatigue disorders, and heart conditions, accurate lab testing is essential to distinguish the root cause and guide effective treatment.

    TSH Test

Thyroid-stimulating hormone is the primary screening test. Elevated TSH indicates hypothyroidism; low TSH suggests hyperthyroidism.

    Free T3 & T4

Measures active thyroid hormones in the bloodstream. These tests confirm the type and severity of thyroid dysfunction.

    Thyroid Antibodies

TPO antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies identify autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's and Grave's Disease.

    Thyroid Ultrasound

Imaging to evaluate thyroid size, structure, and detect nodules that may require further evaluation or biopsy.

    Treatment

    Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to the specific thyroid condition and each patient's unique needs.

    Hypothyroidism

    Levothyroxine (Synthroid)
Synthetic T4 hormone — the gold-standard daily oral medication that restores normal hormone levels.
    Liothyronine (Cytomel)
Synthetic T3 for patients who do not convert T4 adequately.
    Natural Desiccated Thyroid
Some patients benefit from combined T3/T4 from porcine thyroid glands.
    Regular TSH Monitoring
Dose adjustments based on follow-up labs every 6–12 months once stable.

    Hyperthyroidism

    Methimazole (Tapazole)
Blocks thyroid hormone production — first-line antithyroid medication.
    Radioactive Iodine (RAI)
Destroys overactive thyroid tissue; commonly used definitive treatment.
    Beta-Blockers
Control rapid heart rate and tremors while awaiting hormone level normalization.
    Thyroidectomy
Surgical removal when other treatments are not suitable or effective.
